There are conflicting reports as to how HMS Comet, an Acorn class destroyer, sank on 6th August, 1918. One claims that she was torpedoed and sunk by a German or possibly an Austrian U-boat in the Mediterranean, but as no U-boat ever claimed her sinking, that has been largely rejected. The more likely explanation is that while escorting the Steam Ship Gordonia to Taranto from Malta she was in a collision with that vessel and serious damage was done to her stern a large portion of which eventually dropped off. Unable to make any progress she was taken in tow but on 6th August she sank. Four of her crew lost their lives in this incident, one of whom was A Tickner. |
